Lake Saint Croix - Afton

Located on the Minnesota-Wisconsin Border

The Saint Croix River, also called Lake Saint Croix, runs along Minnesota’s northeastern border and flows into the Mississippi River.

Stillwater is the largest waterside town. It has been consistently voted the Best Small Town in Minnesota and was also ranked in Forbes Magazine’s “Top 10 Prettiest Towns in America”.

It features a busy downtown of shops, restaurants, bars, and boutiques. The Twin Cities are approximately a half-hour away, where there are the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and a selection of hospitals.

Picturesque Waters

The Saint Croix River flows for 169 miles through state parks, cities, and untouched forests. The water’s edge features rocky bluffs, beaches, and rich foliage.

Kayakers and canoers love paddling the river because there is lots to see and plenty of places to stop and rest. Others enjoy the waters in pontoons, motorboats, and other watercraft.

Several waterside marinas offer boat services, slips, indoor storage, and rentals. Public boat launches are located on the water as well.

Parks, Beaches, and More

Interstate State Park features lands on both sides of the river and sits just below Taylors Falls. William O’Brien State Park is another excellent park; it features miles of well-maintained trails along with waterside bathrooms.

Just north of Stillwater, the Fairy Falls Hiking Trail features a breathtaking waterfall. Afton State Park features a swimming beach, campgrounds, and hiking trails. Its variety of wildflowers make it an exciting place to explore.

Afton Alps is the go-to place for winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing.
