A Remote Getaway

Mitawan Lake is a 191-acre lake located in Stony River Township, Minnesota. Founded as Superior County in 1855, Lake County went through two name changes before its current name.

An hour north is the town of Ely, the closest place to get gas, groceries, and other amenities. The city also hosts the Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital.

For a big-city destination, Duluth is under 100 miles away. The city has plenty of amenities and attractions for a weekend trip, including the Duluth International Airport.

Fun on the Water

Mitawan Lake is a beautiful spot for enjoying a quiet, remote lake experience. The lake is known for its well-above-average walleye fishery. Anglers can also catch bluegill, burbot, largemouth bass, northern pike, rock bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and white sucker.

Kayakers and canoers can access the lake by carrying their craft a short distance off of Mitawan Lake Road to the lake’s outlet. There is no public access available, making it a private paradise for residents.

Around the Area

Finland State Forest is a more remote and rustic alternative to nearby Tettegouche State Park. There are lots to do at Finland State Park, with over six miles of ATV and dirt bike trails, two miles of hiking trails, and more to explore.

Tettegouche State Park is another quintessential stop in the Superior area. High Falls is only a six-minute car ride or an hour’s walk away from the visitors center! This 70-foot waterfall is a great place to relax, dip your toes in the water, or take some scenic pictures.

A five-minute car ride south will take you to Palisade Head. This 930-foot rock cliff is a favorite spot for those looking to soak in scenic views of Lake Superior. Rock climbing is also a popular pastime here.

Visit Duluth

Duluth is the perfect spot for a weekend city getaway while still offering beautiful, natural scenery.

For an outdoor adventure off the water, visit any of the city's 23 parks. The Leif Erickson Park is one of the most popular ones and features a rose garden with 1,800 bushes. It is widely considered one of the best rose gardens in the state.

Lake Superior Zoo offers a fun, family-friendly trip to see over 140 species in indoor and outdoor settings. The zoo also has a cafe, a gift shop, interactive visits, and behind-the-scenes tours.

Looking to take a scenic drive? The North Shore Scenic Drive spans around 150 miles, following the shoreline of Lake Superior. It offers great photo opportunities, historic landmarks, and quaint shops along the way.
