History

Located in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin, civilization has called the Rice Lake / Chetek region home for centuries, beginning with the Chippewa and other Native American groups, who would fur trap and gather rice at the nearby lakes.

In 1864 John Knapp, co-founder of Knapp, Stout and Co., created the largest lumber firm in the world. This firm owned 115,000 acres of land in the Rice Lake area and produced 90 million feet of cut wood each year.

Today, Rice Lake is often visited for its American Indian Mound preservation sites, miles of nature, and hiking trails.
