Big Averill Lake

Close to the Border

Big Averill Lake, also called Great Averill Pond, is situated south of the border between Quebec and Vermont. Great Averill is located 43 miles from Northeast Kingdom International Airport, and just under 20 miles from Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital.

Fishing and Outdoors

Anglers can cast their lines at Great Averill Pond to catch Lunker lake trout, catfish, and salmon. A boat ramp and pier are located on the eastern side of the lake.

Black Turn Brook State Forest is located seven miles away outside the border town of Stanhope. The Forest features trails and areas for a myriad of recreational activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, and skiing.

The city of Newport is just over 38 miles from Great Averill Pond.

Newport is home to Lake Memphremagog, an international lake bridging Vermont with Quebec. Northern Star Lake Cruises offers a two-hour tour with superb views, food, and refreshments.

The Newport Bike Path runs along the eastern shore of Memphremagog, from Newport to North Derby. The MAC Center for the Arts offers exhibits and workshops for the artistically inclined.
