Lake Athens

Henderson County, Texas

Lake Athens is a 1,799-acre lake just east of Athens, Texas. The lake is an hour and a half from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and only nine minutes away from UT Health Athens. It is also a drivable distance from multiple public schools in Athens.

Fun On and Off the Lake

In Lake Athens, anglers will find mainly crappie and largemouth bass. Aside from fishing, there are numerous other activities on the lake including RV camping, kayaking, and water sport activities.

Close by is the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC), a productive fish hatchery and outdoor education center. TFFC hosts a daily interactive dive show and provides opportunities to fish for rainbow trout or channel catfish. They also have a self-guided wetlands trail.

About 30 minutes away, at NY-TX Zipline Adventures, guests can choose either an hour and a half or two-hour zip line tours through the East Texas Hill Country. Zipliners can take advantage of the beautiful wildlife and learn about ecology as they embark on their guided adventure.

The Athens Scuba Park is one of the only dive resorts in the country that has a full-service dive shop, classroom, training pool, and open water lake all in one location. The underwater park is spring-fed with clear warm water and includes many sunken wrecks including a Hawker 600 Jet and a Lockheed C-140 JetStar.

If residents or visitors of Lake Athens get hungry, they can head over to the Boathouse Bar and Grill, which is right on the lake and offers top-rated burgers. It also serves Mississippi and Texas gulf shrimp as well as hand-crafted cocktails and Texas craft beer.
