More than 100 islands are located across the lake, which extends 40 miles up the Savannah River valley and 26 miles up the Little River valley.

The Dorn Boating and Sportfishing Facility, the largest boat launching and sportfishing facility in the Southeastern U.S., is among the lake's amenities.

There are many campgrounds for campers who want every available comfort or those who want to rough it.

The Bussey Point Wilderness recreation area, made up of 2,500 acres located on a peninsula of the lake, has a horseback riding trail, hiking trails, and mountain biking trails.
