About Lake Sakakawea

In the Missouri River Basin

Lake Sakakawea is a 368,000-acre lake with a 180-mile long shoreline, more than the California Pacific coast. Understandably, the lake is the third-largest man-made reservoir in the United States.

It is located in northwest North Dakota and an hour and a half from Bismarck.

The Sakakawea Medical Center is about 30 minutes from the south side of the lake, though there are clinics scattered among the shoreline. The Minot International Airport is a little over an hour from the east side of the lake.

Kennback’s Jack & Jill and Jason’s Superfoods are both grocers on the north side of the lake.

The Rooster Bar and Grill, Bison Room, Teddy’s Lounge New Town, and Ranchman's 23 Saloon and Steakhouse are all quality places to eat and drink around the lake.

Fishing and Boating

Sakakawea is renowned for chinook salmon but is also home to walleye and northern pike. The lake offers multiple boat ramps, a marina, and a fish-cleaning station.

Lake Sakakawea residents enjoy all kinds of boating, including sailboating and windsurfing.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Lake Sakakawea is teeming with state parks, one of which is the Lake Sakakawea State Park, which offers facilities for camping, hiking, or swimming on the beach.
