The largest of three municipal reservoirs, Lake Townsend is located in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is part of Guilford County and sits on 1,542 acres with 26 miles of shoreline. Besides providing water for the area, it is a popular destination for recreation.

Still Waters

Lake Townsend is a great place for sailboats. Restrictions for powerboats make the still waters perfect for sailing. The Lake Townsend Yacht Club offers members access to small and large sailboat races. It offers sailing lessons as well. The Club is inexpensive and membership is open to the public. You can also bring out electric motor boats, kayaks, and canoes on Lake Townsend. The marina offers boat rentals and a public launch. There is a boat ramp for private boats as well.

The calm waters also make for stellar fishing. Anglers can expect to find largemouth, striped, and hybrid bass as well as black and white crappie and channel catfish. You can try your hand at spinning, bait casting, or fly fishing. Fishing is allowed from boats and from the piers.

Lake Townsend is surrounded by several hiking trails, campgrounds, golf courses, and more to keep you busy when you aren’t on the lake. When you get hungry at the lake, you can picnic or try out Bryan Park Grill in the lake’s park.
