The lake is also known as Madison Reservoir.

The Chenango Canal was opened in 1836 to connect the Erie Canal to the Susquehanna River, Utica to Binghamton. Madison Brook was dammed up to create Madison Reservoir as a water source for the new canal.
Soon after becoming a popular recreational site, Madison Reservoir was renamed Lake Moraine in 1905, recognizing the glacial moraines on its shores.
The reservoir is well known for producing large chain pickerel, up to 24 inches. The largemouth bass is the main game fish, and fish in the 12 to 14-inch range are expected, with fish in the 20-inch range caught each year.
Panfish, like yellow perch, are abundant but tend to be on the small side. Bullhead fishing can be excellent in early spring. Walleye are becoming more productive in the lake and should provide some good angling opportunities. Lake Moraine is stocked annually with 780 tiger musky as well.
The Lake Moraine Association hosts fun community events and meetings throughout the year to help foster community engagement, like concerts, the 4th of July Boat Parade, Ladies of the Lake, and more.
The Ladies of the Lake are a popular group, and they host meetings so everyone in the area can come together and relish old and new friendships. They will usually take part in activities such as knitting and storytelling.
