About Cuba Lake

Convenient to Buffalo, New York

Cuba Lake is the largest human-made reservoir in the state of New York. It is located north of the Village of Cuba, in western Allegany County, and is 68 miles from the city of Buffalo.

Cuba Lake was initially created in 1858 to be a source of water for the Genesee Valley Canal system. The reservoir is 445 acres in size, with six miles of shoreline. It is relatively deep as well, with a maximum depth of 46 feet and a mean depth of 20 feet.

Fishing

Cuba Lake is considered a great fishing spot by local anglers. The beds of aquatic vegetation offer the perfect habitats for many fish to hide away in. Walleye are the main predator species living in Cuba Lake, and fish are often caught in the 15-20 inch size range.

Northern pike grows to an even more extensive reservoir with 36-inch fish surprising anglers when they hit their hook. Smallmouth and largemouth bass are also popular species caught here. Multiple species of panfish are found lurking in the waters, with yellow perch being the dominant species.

Cuba Lake is also an excellent place to fish for common carp, and anglers are encouraged to experience the fun of fighting these fish that can exceed 20 pounds.

Fun in the Wilderness

Just north of Cuba Lake is the Hanging Bog Wildlife Management Area. This 4,560-acre swathe of land mainly consists of rolling hills, forests, small fields, and marshes. The area gets its name from a human-made bog inside the property.

Visitors can enjoy hunting/trapping, fishing, wildlife viewing, and hiking around the area.
