About First Lake

Belonging to the Essex Chain of Lakes

First Lake is one of the nine lakes belonging to the Essex Chain of Lakes in New York's Adirondack region, surrounded by mountains and forests. These lakes' shorelines are densely wooded and offer diverse wildlife viewing.

First Lake is located in Herkimer County, New York, and is the southernmost lake in the chain. The lake is connected to five lakes via narrow channels, with Fourth Lake being the most considerable portion.

Recreation

Boating, swimming, whitewater rafting, hiking, fishing, and hunting are popular activities on First Lake. All of the nine Essex Chain of Lakes offer similar opportunities.

Fish species present in the lake are lake trout, Atlantic salmon, landlocked salmon, white sucker, brook trout, rainbow trout, yellow perch, and brown trout.

Enjoy the slopes at McCauley Mountain Ski Area on the shores of First Lake. Situated on the McCauley Mountain, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy the 633-foot vertical drop. There are ski areas for people of all skill levels. If skiing isn't your favorite sport, you can try the mountain biking trails out instead.

Go on a hike in the 79,487-acre Moose River Plains Complex. The area contains low-lying river valleys, hills and low mountains, and 3,500-foot high mountain summits, Little Moose Mountain and Manbury Mountain in the Little Moose Wilderness. You can enjoy hiking trails, camping, paddling, fishing, boating, biking, horseback riding, hunting/trapping, snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, and general wildlife viewing.
