Near the St. Lawrence River

Butterfield Lake is a lake located by Redwood, New York, near the St. Lawrence River that serves as a physical border between the United States and Canada.

Water from Mud Lake, which sits south of Butterfield, flows into Butterfield Lake through a small channel. It is one of the eighteen water bodies that make up the Indian River Lakes system.

Sitting on Lake Ontario's shore is the small town of Watertown, which is only a 40 minutes drive from Butterfield Lake.

Fun on the Lake

This quiet lake can be used for various recreational purposes, including boating, swimming, tubing, fishing, jet skiing, and more. Residents love the lake for its peaceful environment.

The most common game fish in Butterfield Lake are northern pike and largemouth bass. Largemouth bass up to 20 inches are hooked relatively regularly. Smallmouth bass reaches a similar size, but are less common. North pike up to 30 inches, and yellow perch up to 12 inches provide good ice fishing and early spring action. As of 2012, over 300,000 walleye fry were being stocked annually.

Enjoy the St. Lawrence River, which is the outlet for the entire Great Lakes system. With an average width of two miles and a maximum depth of over 200 feet, this is the largest east-west river in North America.

Smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, yellow perch, bullheads, and various types of panfish are all familiar to the St. Lawrence River. So, it is a great nearby resource for committed anglers.

Visit Watertown, New York

The sprawling lake town, Watertown, sits along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, just under an hour's drive from Butterfield Lake. It is one of the larger nearby towns with restaurants on the river, malls for shopping, and places to stop for a drink.

Ives Hill Country Club is a great place to stop for a weekend round of golf. With 18 holes on a well-manicured green, you are sure to have a relaxing time practicing your game.

The New York Zoo is also located in Watertown and spans 32 acres with dozens of native species living in their habitats. Some of the animals are more common, like black bears and turtles, while others like the Canada lynx have earned an endangered or threatened status.
