Shadow Lake is a 35-acre lake between the larger Canobie Lake and Arlington Mill Reservoir. Its waters have an average depth of seven feet but can be as deep as 25 feet.
Surveyor Theophilus Satchwell referred to it as a “fair sheet of water hidden among the hills” in the 1600s. In the early 1900s, the Shadowland Recreation Area was built on the lake, including cottages, a dance hall that hung over the water, and a sizable beach.
Pontoons, motorboats, fishing boats, kayaks, and canoes run the waters of Shadow Lake all summer long. It has a plentiful stock of bass, chain pickerel, black crappie, yellow perch, brown bullhead, sunfish, and brindle shiner.
The 200-acre Salem Town Forest is just south of the lake. The land has over five miles of trails for hiking or biking that feature wetlands, a boardwalk, and local wildlife.

Mine Falls Park is the top attraction in Nashua, a 325-acre park in the heart of the city. It boasts miles of trails, water for boating, fishing opportunities, and nature observing.
