Great East Lake straddles the New Hampshire-Maine border, sitting in Wakefield, New Hampshire, and Acton, Maine.

Portland, Maine is under 60 miles away, and Concord, New Hampshire is under 85 miles away.

The Portland International Jetport and the Portsmouth International Airport at Pease are both under 60 miles away. The Huggins Hospital is under 25 miles away from the New Hampshire side.

Swimmers can enjoy a public beach on the northern side of the lake, and a boat launch near the lake's outlet provides access for boating enthusiasts.

Anglers can expect to find lake trout, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, American eel, hornpout, white perch, black crappie, chain pickerel, and more.

Other popular activities in the area include sailing, skiing, wildlife viewing, nature observing, hiking, snowmobiling, and golfing.

Visit Portland

Great East Lake’s proximity to Maine also means that the city of Portland isn’t far off.

In Portland, visitors can expect to find great shopping and coffee shops at historic Old Port. In Old Port, most of the buildings are constructed entirely of brick, remnants from Maine’s shipping days. The older architecture makes Old Port an excellent photo destination.

Another top attraction is Allagash Brewery, which offers tastings and a food truck featuring lobster rolls.

Newcomers to Portland are invited to garner an appreciation for the beautiful collections at the Portland Museum of Art.

Explore Concord

Concord, the capital city of New Hampshire, has lots to offer residents of Great East Lake.

The top attraction is the independently owned Red River Theatre. This theatre offers screenings of independent films as well as classic movies.

Those more interested in live performances should head to Capitol Center for the Arts. There they will find ballet, country, rock, and Broadway performances.

Another attraction is the Mcauliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, named after Christina Mcauliffe and Alan Shepard. This museum features interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits as well as a planetarium.
