The lake is central to three major cities: Minneapolis (125 miles south), Fargo, North Dakota (124 miles northwest), and Duluth (143 miles northeast).

The closest location for emergency care is Lakewood Health System Emergency Room, 14 miles northwest. The Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport is 137 miles southeast.
