Undiscovered Until the Mid-1800s

Until Minnesota became a booming logging location in the mid-1800s, this region of the state had been untouched. Part of the Mississippi River Chain, steamships carried logs in and out of Pokegama by 1868.

The high demand for supplies, clothing, and food led to a large, flourishing pioneer village that developed into the city of Grand Rapids we know today.

Pokegama is a go-to location for all things lake life. During the summer, boating, water skiing, fishing, sailing, and swimming are some of the most popular activities.

On its sandy beaches, people enjoy swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, and simply relaxing. While touring the lake, you can spot mallards, loons, lakeside deer, moose, elk, or eagles flying above.

Watersports are most often performed mid-lake while Sherry Arm, Wendigo Arm, and Sugar Bay are famous. Pokegama Lake is proud of its large-sized walleye but also holds a variety of other fish.

During winter, residents enjoy the frozen lake for ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.

On the northeastern shore, the Pokegama Golf Course features an 18-hole championship course and the Pokegama Grill.

The nearby Chippewa National Forest has trails for hiking, mountain biking, nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and more. In the towering white pines, you are likely to spot a variety of birds.
