About Lower Whitefish Lake - Ideal Twp

One of Central Minnesota’s Best Locations

The Whitefish Chain of Lakes is the largest of the Brainerd Lakes Region and one of the most popular.

Nearby, Crosslake has grocery stores, restaurants, shops, schools, and other city conveniences. Travel just a few miles south to Brainerd for access to Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport and Essential Health Saint Joseph Hospital.

A Great Body of Water

Covering 7,370 acres, Lower Whitefish Lake makes up over half of the Whitefish Chain of Lakes. Its waters can be as deep as 137 feet.

In total, the 14 lakes cover around 14,000 acres of water and have 119 miles of shoreline.

Sunning, Swimming, and Boating

There are many sandy spots around Whitefish where you can swim, sunbathe, or have a picnic. The wooded environment is fantastic for birding, but one can also spot ducks, otters, deer elk, eagles, or an occasional beer.

On a sunny day, Lower Whitefish Lake sees many pontoons, speed boats, kayaks, canoes, and more. Behind the boats, people enjoy water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing.

The big island between Upper and Lower Whitefish Lake is a nature area that features mature maples and basswoods. Some come to the island for hiking, while others picnic on the sands.

Other Activities At Whitefish

The Whitefish Chain of Lakes is a prime location for fishing largemouth bass, northern pike, and bluegill, but it houses several other fish species. When Whitefish freezes over, it becomes a hub of ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and other winter activities.

If you are looking for an activity off the water, the Whitefish Golf Course is located just below the lake. Foothills National Forest is northwest of the lake, where you can hike, bike, ride ATVs, snowmobile, or cross-country ski.
