On the Water Fun

Hennepin Lake has a footprint of 418 acres and is 14 feet at the deepest point. Except for one narrow hole, most of the shallow lake is less than five feet in depth.

While on the lake, there are many things to do on the water. Whether owned or rented, the waters offer boating, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming.

Due to the shallow waters, the lake is excellent for children to be introduced to lake living and learn water activities.

Fishing and Winterkill

The lake has years of excellent fishing, but some years can be subject to periodic winterkill due to the lake's shallow depth. Winterkill typically occurs during long winters with heavy snowfall.

While this happens, decaying aquatic vegetation on the lake bottom uses oxygen, causing oxygen levels in the lake to drop. Gamefish such as largemouth bass, bluegill, and walleye are less tolerant of low oxygen levels, while bullheads and northern pike can better survive these harsh winters.

During these times, there is a lessened fish population, but after several years without winterkill, the fishing in Lake Hennepin becomes exceptional in population.

When a winterkill occurs, LaSalle State Recreation has you covered. With a footprint of 221 acres and 213 feet deep, LaSalle Lake is one of Minnesota's most immaculate and deepest lakes. The lake supports walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, sunfish species, and several more.

While hanging out at the lake house, Hennepin Lake offers relaxing and tranquil surroundings where hanging in the hammock all day is perfectly acceptable! There is plenty of hiking and nature walking to do while exploring the beauty of the lake.

La Salle Lake State Recreation offers 11.5 miles of hiking and biking trails, cross country skiing, snowmobile trails, and snowshoeing for the active outdoors people. The park's landscape has been identified as an area of "High and Outstanding Biodiversity Significance" by the Minnesota County Biological Survey.
