Islands and Outdoor Activities

Long Lake is the largest of 20 inland lakes located in Long Lake Township.

Dotting the lake's 2,860-acre surface area are four islands, each of which has been designated as public use parks and nature preserves. Long Lake residents and visitors are invited to tour Long Island, Picnic Island, Fox Island, and South Island at their leisure.

Boating, tubing, swimming, and fishing are permitted on Long Lake. Anglers most commonly catch large and smallmouth bass, perch, walleye, northern pike, and muskellunge pike. In the winter, ice fishing is popular among residents.

Long Lake Township is home to several parks and recreation areas including Gilbert Park, where lake patrons can use the public boat launch and relax on its sandy beaches. The park also features two beach volleyball courts and a picnic area. A second public boat launch is at the end of Crescent Shores Road.

Haywood Park is another popular Long Lake area hot spot for its three baseball diamonds, playground, two soccer fields, and shaded picnic area.

Long Lake guests and residents can enjoy wine and hard cider tastings in nearby Traverse City at the Left Foot Charley vineyard. The winery sources ingredients from 18 of the best local growers in Northern Michigan to present a unique variety of flavors. The tasting room is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Wine lovers can also tour the entire Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail, featuring more than 20 northern Michigan vineyards and wineries.

Also located less than half an hour away is the Great Lakes Children's Museum. Open every day but Sunday, admission is $7 per guest.

Other popular area pastimes are playing golf at The Crown Golf Club, birding at the Carter Strong Bird Sanctuary, and exploring The Botanical Garden at Historic Barns Park.
