Lake Superior History

Lake Superior was called "Kitchi-Gummi or (Great Water) by the Chippewa Native Americans. The Chippewa were not the first to discover Lake Superior though, its earliest history dates back about 10,000 years ago after the last Ice Age. The first to inhabit the lake were known as the Plano.

The lake has always been important in the Great Lakes Waterway, but with this comes many historical shipwrecks. On the southern shore of the lake between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point is known as the "Graveyard of the Great Lakes", as many wrecked ships can still be found under the waters surface.

Lake Superior is well known among anglers for being one of the best bodies of water for fishing. This lake has over 80 species of fish including bloater, brook trout, lake trout, northern pike, chinook salmon and rainbow smelt.

While fishing, some of the best views of the lake can be seen from the edge of the boat, being surrounded by three states bordering some of the cleanest waters known to man.

Nature and Parks

Lake Superior is surrounded by many parks, nature trails and landmarks. One of the most popular much see locations on lake Superior is the Isla Royale National Park.

The Park is a remote island near Michigan's border. The park can only be accessed by either boat or plane, but it is well worth the voyage. Along with the beauty and wildlife that this island has to offer, it is filled with hiking trails, boating and scuba opportunities.

One of the most exciting things to explore is the abandoned shipwrecks just under the surface of the water right outside the island. Visitors can scuba dive these areas to find these sunken ships along with artifacts.
