Black Lake is a 10,130-acre lake split between Cheboygan and Presque Isle Counties. It is the seventh-largest inland lake in Michigan and is less than 30 minutes away from Lake Huron. The Black Lake area pre-1800s was first populated by bands of the Chippewa Nation and French fur traders. During the industrial boom of the mid-to-late-1800s, limestone quarrying and logging brought settlers to the area. The nearest hospital, McClaren Northern Michigan-Cheboygan Campus, is around 30 minutes north in the city of Cheboygan, MI. The closest airport, Cherry Capital Airport, is a little more than two hours south in Traverse City, MI.

What’s There to Do On the Water?

Black Lake is known as a fantastic spot for anglers to cast a line. Species reported to be in its waters are bluegill, northern pike, rock bass, lake sturgeon, walleye, and muskellunge. This lake’s claim to fame is its winter lake sturgeon fishing. When the water freezes over, anglers take to the lake with spears in hand to catch this endangered fish. Don’t let Black’s dark water fool you! This lake is known for its excellent water quality, so swimming, boating, kayaking, and much more are waiting for you. The southern basin is primarily where water sports occurs because of its almost 50-foot depth.

The Black Mountain Forest Recreation Area offers year-round outdoor fun! During the warmer seasons, visitors can enjoy 30 miles of hiking trails and 60 miles of off-road vehicle trails. When the snow starts to fall, the off-road vehicle trails double as a snowmobile trail and the hiking trails as cross-country skiing trails. There are plenty of great restaurants on and off the lake. On the shores of Black Lake are Lorenzo’s Pizza, The Bluffs on the Lake, and 211 Bar & Grill. In the town of Cheboygan, you will find Mulligan’s Restaurant, Great Lakes Grill, Duncan City Pizza, and Nauti Inn Barstro. Onaway State Park is located on the southern shores of Black Lake and offers many outdoor activities. Visitors can soak up some sun on the cobblestone beaches, campsites, and a diverse three-mile hiking trail.
