Premier Lake Destination

Moosehead Lake is Maine's largest body of water, situated in the foothills of the Longfellow Mountains. The scenic expanse is regarded as Maine's top lake destination.

Greenville is on the south end of the lake, home to shopping, dining, and lodging options along with the Northern Light Hospital. Bangor's international airport and other major facilities are just over 100 miles away.

Largest Lake of Maine

On an expanse of 75,000 acres, you will feel that the waters of Moosehead Lake are never-ending. The lake is 40 miles long and gets as wide as 10 miles.

Over 80 islands spot the lake, with Sugar Island being the largest. The lake's unique "moose head" shape resulted from the glacier that was once in its place.

Rock cliffs, some 800 feet above the water, are located on the lake's eastern shore. The rest of the shoreline is dense with trees.

Recreational Hot-Spot

Many enjoy the serenity of kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding the picturesque lake. Others chose to boat the vast expanse in pontoons, speed boats, jet skis, fishing boats, and more.

Thrill-seekers take part in water skiing, tubing, and wakeboarding while others have fun sailing, swimming, and relaxing by the water.

Anglers can expect to make great catches of bass, salmon, perch, lake trout, brook trout, and more.

Parks on the Lake

Mount Kineo State Park is an island on the lake. The Indian Trail will lead you to the top for the best view you can get of Moosehead Lake.

Mount Kineo Golf Course occupies the southern end of the island, where you can golf lush greenways with the mountain looming above.

Lily Bay State Park offers boating access and even more hiking trails; the area can also be used for cross-country skiing in the winter.

Shaw Mountain Ski Area, located on the lake's western shore, is the best ski resort in the area. The facility offers a variety of trails for any skill level.
