Towns of Sidney, Oakland, and Belgrade

Messalonskee Lake is bordered on its nine-mile-long lakeshore by the towns of Sidney, Oakland, and Belgrade.

Nearby is downtown Belgrade, where you can find shops and award-winning dining. If Belgrade is not enough, Augusta is just 18 miles away from Oakland.

The Augusta State Airport is 12.6 miles away and the Alfond Center for Health is 8.6 miles away for easy travel and close medical care.

Second-Largest Lake in the Belgrade Region

Messalonskee Lake has a surface area of 3,510 acres and has 30 miles of shoreline.

In the 1700s, settlers arrived after traveling along the Messalonskee Stream and were able to industrialize the area.

Later on, in the 1800s, visitors began to pile in from the other Belgrade Lakes. Visitors also arrived via the Sunset Railroad that came through town.

Swimming, Boating, and Wildlife

There are opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating, windsurfing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and more.

It is the perfect location for kayaking or canoeing due to the scenic bogs and wetlands that exhibit all sorts of wildlife.

The surrounding hiking trails are an excellent place for bird watching or a picnic.

Fishers come to the lake for their chances at brook trout, brown trout, landlocked salmon, which are all stocked annually.

Boat ramps are provided for any small boats that want to go out on the water.
