Maranacook Lake

One of Maine’s Finest Lakes

Maranacook Lake spans the towns of Readfield and Winthrop in Kennebec County, Maine.

The lake is located just 10 miles west of Augusta, a short distance from many restaurants, shops, and hotels. Augusta Hospital and the Augusta State Airport are also located in the city.

A Diverse Environment

Maranacook Lake features two large basins, each with a unique environment. Residential developments, seasonal camps, cabins, and vacation rentals are located across the entire lake.

The northern basin spans 700 acres and has a maximum depth of 39 feet. It is an odd shape with several small islands in the middle.

The southern basin boasts high water quality with 1,000 acres of surface area and a maximum depth of 118 feet.

A Variety of Lake Activities

Maranacook Lake’s large southern basin is a hub of watersports, including boating, jet skiing, water skiing, kayaking, and fishing.

Its pristine waters are enjoyable for swimming, especially on the sandy shores of Winthrop Beach. The cool and deep waters are home to brown trout, which excite anglers looking to toss out a line.

The warm waters of the northern basin hold healthy populations of smallmouth and largemouth bass, chain pickerel, white perch, and yellow perch.

Time off the Water

The Augusta Country Club is a great place to spend time on the greens or dine out.

Venture further into Augusta to explore riverside restaurants and shops, visit the Old Fort Western Outpost, or observe nature at the Viles Arboretum.
