Chesuncook Lake

Piscataquis County, Maine

Chesuncook Lake is a reservoir in Northwest Piscataquis, Maine, under 125 miles from Bangor. In 1916, the original lake was enlarged by the Ripogenus Dam to include Ripogenus Lake, Caribou Lake, and Moose Pond.

The Bangor International Airport is around 120 miles away, and the Millinocket Regional Hospital is 42 miles away.

On the Water Fun

As Maine’s third-largest lake, Chesuncook Lake covers above 25,000 acres and is approximately 22 miles long. It is also the starting point for whitewater rafting on the Penobscot River.

Popular activities on the lake include boating, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, swimming, fishing, and relaxing on the shore. The primary boat access to the lake is off Golden Road that connects Greenville and Moosehead.

Anglers looking to toss out a line will find salmon, brook trout, lake trout, white perch, yellow perch, hornpout, smelt, lake whitefish, white sucker, longnose sucker, blacknose dace, common shiner, creek chub, fallfish, golden shiner, lake chub, and cusk.

There are also numerous campsites located around the lake area to enjoy a nice weekend outdoors.
