Lake Pontchartrain is surprisingly shallow, with an average depth of 12 feet. This waterbody expands through 20 different counties, with 16 in Louisiana and four in Mississippi.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway crosses through the lake and is the second-longest straight bridge globally, running 24 miles long. Several large cities rest near the edge of the lake, including New Orleans and Covington.
