Louisiana’s Largest Lake

One of Louisiana’s best-known lakes is the sizable Lake Pontchartrain. The lake covers 403,200 acres with 351 miles of shoreline, and this shallow estuary is made up of brackish water that flows in from the Gulf of Mexico. It is considered the second-largest saltwater lake in the United States.

Lake Pontchartrain is surprisingly shallow, with an average depth of 12 feet. This waterbody expands through 20 different counties, with 16 in Louisiana and four in Mississippi.

Lake Pontchartrain Causeway crosses through the lake and is the second-longest straight bridge globally, running 24 miles long. Several large cities rest near the edge of the lake, including New Orleans and Covington.

There are 25 boat launches in various locations, and most of them are free to the public. Bonnabel Boat Launch, Breakwater Park, Frenier Landing, Seabook Bridge Launch are some of the few that are popular for launching boats.

Popular fish species found in the lake are speckled trout, white trout, sheepshead, and redfish. The lake is abundant, with 120 more fish that are not listed. It is an exciting spot for anglers because it has freshwater, saltwater, and brackish fish species within its borders.

It is the perfect place to observe marine life, birds and catch a variety of fish due to its shallow waters. You can even sight dolphins, sharks, and other unique ocean life at times.
