Sylvan Lake

Near the Michigan and Ohio State Borders

Sylvan Lake is a reasonably large lake encompassing 669 acres of water in the town of Rome City, Indiana.

With 16 miles of gorgeous shoreline, you are sure to fall in love with the views in this quaint town. This lake is human-made and consists of five basins, which form to make Sylvan Lake.

The lake is also known as the home of Gene Stratton-Porter, a famous self-trained American author, nature photographer, and naturalist.

Life on the Lake

Sylvan Lake is indeed used as an all-season lake by residents and visitors.

Skiing is permitted on the lake, and residents can enjoy a plethora of water sports here. Boating, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are popular sports enjoyed on the waters of Sylvan Lake.

The lake’s most significant attraction is The Big Island. The 110-acre island was purchased in 2007 by The Sylvan Lake Association to preserve its natural beauty from commercial developers. Visitors and residents can arrive by water, explore the Island trails, and experience the beauty of nature right on Sylvan Lake.

The Sylvan Lake Association hosts many community events throughout the year to help drive community engagement. Lake residents can attend bingo nights, Fourth of July Fireworks, live music, fishing tournaments, a poker run, and more.
