About Chain O'Lakes - Grass Lake

Between Milwaukee and Chicago

Known as the shallowest lake in the Chain O'Lakes waterway system, Grass Lake is one of nine lakes linked to it. It is one of the more mammoth-sized lakes in the system, covering 1,360 acres with nine miles of shoreline. The Chain is reported to be the busiest inland recreational waterway per acre in the United States.

The Chain is conveniently located around an hour from Chicago and south of the Wisconsin state line.

Lake Recreation

Grass Lake is especially loved amongst fishers due to its extremely shallow waters. Its maximum depth is six feet, with an average depth of three feet. Boaters must stay in the middle of the lake to avoid being stranded, leaving the shorelines peaceful for fishers.

Grass Lake has a wide variety of fish species, and because of the shallow water, channel catfish and carp are bountiful catches. Other species like largemouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, yellow bass, muskie, walleye, perch, crappie, white bass, northern pike, bullhead catfish, and smallmouth bass are also found in the shallow waters.

Boating, ice fishing, skiing, biking, picnicking, ice skating, hunting, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and hiking can all be enjoyed around Grass Lake. This lake truly has something for everyone.

Nearby is the 840-acre Chain O'Lakes State Park. This park borders three of the Chain lakes and neighbors a 3,230-acre conservation area.

Trails for hiking and horseback riding cover the 2,450-acre park, which also offers overnight campgrounds. Hunting is permitted in the season for doves and waterfowl; there is an archery season for deer. Visitors can even have fun in the winter when there is ice fishing and cross-country skiing.

Nearby Shops

Due to the large size of the 7,000-acre Chain O'Lakes region, there is a plethora of shops, restaurants, vacation rentals, and attractions for the family to enjoy.

The Best Place to Experience Lake Life
