About Chain O'Lakes - Fox Lake

Between Milwaukee and Chicago

Considered to be the "Heart of the Chain O'Lakes," sits 1,810-acre Fox Lake. Connecting 15 lakes and 45 miles of river, Fox Lake is located an hour from the windy city of Chicago.

It is one of the largest lakes in the Chain O'Lakes waterway system. The Chain is reported to be the busiest inland recreational waterway per acre in the United States.

Fox Lake connects with the 420-acre Nippersink Lake, which some consider being a part of Fox Lake.

Lake Recreation

Like all the lakes in the Chain O'Lakes waterway system, Fox Lake has a wide variety of fish species, and anglers can catch plenty of walleye, northern pike, muskie, white bass and perch, channel catfish, and crappies.

Boating, ice fishing, skiing, biking, picnicking, ice skating, hunting, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and hiking can all be enjoyed around Fox Lake. There are around a dozen boat launch ramps on the lake for easy boat access. This lake truly has something for everyone.

Nearby is the 840-acre Chain O'Lakes State Park. This park borders three of the Chain lakes and neighbors a 3,230-acre conservation area.

Trails for hiking and horseback riding cover the 2,450-acre park, which also offers overnight campgrounds. Hunting is permitted in a season for doves and waterfowl; there is an archery season for deer. Visitors can even have fun in the winter when there is ice fishing and cross-country skiing.

Nearby Shops and Festivals

Due to the large size of the 7,000-acre Chain O'Lakes region, there is a plethora of shops, restaurants, vacation rentals, and attractions for the family to enjoy. There are many water-accessible eating and drinking establishments on Fox Lake.

There are several festivals on and around Fox Lake during the summer. In past years the lake has hosted Venetian Night in August, the Land & Lake Tattoo Festival in August, and The 19th Annual Cardboard Cup Regatta in August.
