Baker Lake is a 112-acre lake located inside the expansive Baker's Lake Nature Preserve, which encompasses 219.42 acres. Sometimes called Baker's Lake, this area is known for its beauty and unique natural elements.

Located in Cook County, Baker Lake is around an hour's drive from the bustling city of Chicago and Lake Michigan's calm waters.

History

Initially, Baker's Lake formed as a result of draining a peat bog, which began to smolder with fire. To extinguish the fire, the area was flooded to create the lake.

A Popular Area for Bird Watching

Baker's Lake Nature Preserve is well-known for its population of rare and endangered birds. This preserve is every bird-watchers dream as the area has been preserved to facilitate the growth of the bird population.

The preserve protects a rookery for four species of colonial nesting birds; black-crowned night heron, great egret, double-crested cormorant, and great blue heron. The area also supports common moorhen, yellow-headed blackbird, and black tern. Other species, especially waterfowl, are present during migration.

The nature preserve is heavily invested in protecting the bird's habitat, and residents on Baker Lake get to experience its natural beauty every day. To protect the bird's nests, boating, kayaking, fishing, and canoeing are prohibited on Baker Lake.
