Connecticut’s Second Largest Lake

Lake Lillinonah is Connecticut’s second largest lake located just east of the state’s largest lake, Candlewood Lake.

The surrounding towns of Brookfield, Bridgewater, Newtown, New Milford, and Southbury provide various conveniences. The Danbury Hospital & Emergency Room or the Danbury Municipal Airport are a short drive west.

An hour’s drive will bring you to the Bradley International Airport or downtown Hartford.

Runs for 12 Miles

Lake Lillinonah is quite river-like, stretching for 12 miles and having steep tree-lined shores. Its waters cover 1,547 acres in total and have a whopping 45 miles of shoreline. The lake was impounded in 1955 by the Shepaug Dam on the Housatonic River.

Recreation Galore

The lake is a fishers paradise, having a healthy population of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, perch, northern pike, and catfish. Ranking number one in the state for bass growth rates, it produces several massive basses to host over 50 annual tournaments.

Lakers also enjoy the expanse of water for pontooning, water skiing, tubing, kayaking, and canoeing. With 12 miles of waters, the exploring never ends. Hopefully, boaters can keep their eyes open for local wildlife along their journey to spot one of the many native bald eagles.

There are countless hiking locations around the lake, including Upper Paugussett State Forest, Pryden Falls, Rocky Glenn Scenic Reserve, or Lover’s Leap State Park.

Golfing and Other Attractions

Play 18 holes of golf at the Candlewood Valley Golf Club, where there is “unmatched signature guest service.”

Just a few miles up the road, Quassy Amusement Park is a source of all-day fun with coasters, a waterpark, a freshwater beach, games, and dining options. The Mount Southington Ski-Area is just 35 minutes from the lake, offering a selection of skiing and snowboarding trails for day or night.
