Hayward and Stone Lake are 140 miles away from Minneapolis, Minnesota and 75 miles away from Duluth, Minnesota.

History

With a rich history of classic resorts and sprawling lodges, which drew the rich and famous - along with the infamous - to the area lakes throughout the decades, Hayward has long been a favorite destination for many.

Originally developed as a logging camp because of its rich pine forests, Hayward attracted its early inhabitants in the latter 1,800s.  But once the forests began to diminish in the 1,920s, tourism grabbed hold of the area and never let go.  

With a vast array of high-quality lakes, abundant fishing, and plenty of uninhabited lakeshores, those who visited here began to buy up some of the best lakefront properties available to build their own private getaways.  And many of those still stand today frozen in time.

What You Can Expect

With some of the largest water bodies in Wisconsin, the area has become similar to Brainerd, Minnesota in its appeal to the wealthy.
