Lake Austin

Formerly known as Lake McDonald, Lake Austin is a water reservoir on the Colorado River northwest of Texas’s capital city, Austin.

It is one of the seven Highland Lakes and generally remains at a constant level. Around the lake are cliffs dotted with numerous luxurious lake homes.

Some consider Austin weather nearly perfect with over 300 days of sunshine and 68-degree average weather.

Lake Austin is less than 20 minutes away from Ascension Seton Northwest Hospital and less than 40 minutes from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Lake Recreation

Stocked with largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish, anglers will have a heyday at Lake Austin. The high cliffs in places along the shore provide shelter from the wind, which makes the lake ideal for boating.

Several companies rent sailboats, motorboats, canoes, pontoon boats, and large party boats. The Austin Parks and Recreation Department also offers canoeing, kayaking, and sailing classes.

Outdoor Activities

Several nature preserves surround the lake. For instance, the Common Ford Ranch Park is one of the most natural park settings in Austin.

Golfers are within a short distance from the University of Texas Golf Course, a 7,412-yard private course that is also home to the University of Texas Golf Teams.

Enjoy the City

Austin is renowned as the live music capital of the world. Consequently, it has a thriving nightlife including over 250 music venues for rock, blues, jazz, hip hop, punk, and Latino shows.

The Broken Spoke is known as the “Last True Texas Dance Hall” and is an Austin staple. Antone’s, Austin’s “Home of the Blues” is a favorite among music-lovers.

Austin’s cuisine is a unique blend of Tex-Mex, barbecue, Asian and American food. Many vendors also serve an array of craft beer, wine, and liquor.

All Kinds of Football

Less than half an hour away from Lake Austin is the legendary University of Texas (UT). UT has a rich sporting tradition at the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium where the Texas Longhorns play in the fall. Hook’em horns!

If American football isn’t your cup of tea, Austin is home to Austin Football Club, a new professional soccer team that competes in Major League Soccer. They are currently constructing a stadium in the city.

Quality Education

Laura Welch Bush Elementary School and Canyon Ridge Middle School are very close to the lake and are part of the Leander Independent School District, one of the highest-ranked school districts in the state.
