Lake Russell is a reservoir created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by construction of Richard B. Russell Dam on the Savannah River bordering Elbert County, Georgia and Abbeville and Anderson counties in South Carolina. There are 21 recreation/public access areas on Lake Russell (8 in Georgia and 13 in South Carolina). The 210 feet tall Lake Russell Dam is half way up the Savannah River, which was impounded to create the lake. The 30 Mile Lake is popular for camping & fishing. Federal regulation prohibits private shoreline development, and the lake is protected by a 300 ft. collar of protected land. The Lake Russell fishing experience is similar to that of the pristine Lake Jocassee experience, except in a piedmont setting. The Russell experience goes beyond just fishing visitors enjoy the beautiful scenery, as well as the abundant wildlife. Lake Secession feeds into Lake Russell!
