Over 3,000 Acres of Beauty

Created by the damming of the Catawba River in 1924, Mountain Island Lake now covers 3,281 acres and has over 60 miles of shoreline.

The waters surrounded a mountain that now exists as an island on the western end of the lake, hence the name Mountain Island Lake.

Breathtaking Landscapes, Pristine Waters

Mountain Island Lake is a popular choice for homeowners and visitors alike, located just a half-hour drive from Charlotte, North Carolina’s city center.

The city boasts a variety of family-friendly attractions along with a bustling nightlife scene. It is also great for restaurants, markets, and schools.

There are four hospitals within 20 miles of the lake: BSA Caromont Health, Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, Concentra Urgent Care, and Carolinas Health Care System.

The nearest principal traffic corridors, I-85 and I-485, provide access to local connector roadways, which lead to the lake. The Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is another means of travel just 15 miles away.

Recreation for the Whole Family

Mountain Island Lake is a popular destination for boating, water skiing, and fishing.

Watersports like kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing are also popular. The lake features two public boat launches. Fishing enthusiasts can catch a bite from catfish, several varieties of bass, white perch, and sunfish.

Close to half of Mountain Island Lake is a designated park area with a mosaic of natural forests surrounding the waters protected by Mecklenburg, Lincoln, and Gaston Counties and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Explore the Area

The Historic Latta Plantation includes a 1,150-acre county park on the eastern end of the lake. It features several historic buildings, the Carolina Raptor Center, and miles of hiking and cycling trails.

The US National Whitewater Center is located on the Catawba River just outside of Charlotte. In addition to white water rafting, the park offers zip lining, rock climbing, mountain biking, roping, and kayaking.

Charlotte is home to Carowinds Theme Park, U.S. National Whitewater Center, NASCAR Hall of Fame, Discovery Place Science, the Billy Graham Library, and many other attractions.
