Falling along the Catawba River, Lake Hickory is in Catawba County, North Carolina. It is a whopping 4,200 acres with 105 miles of shoreline. Residing in Hickory, North Carolina, Lake Hickory is just 75 miles away from Charlotte. Twenty percent of the land around the lake is kept as a nature reserve.

On the Lake

Lake Hickory is most notable for its crystal-clear waters. Being a man-made reservoir, it has a sand bottom and is a fully recreational lake. Boating, jet skis, waterskiing, sailing, and more are all favorite pastimes on Lake Hickory. There are multiple marinas and boat ramps from which you can get your watercraft out on the lake.

This is also a prime spot for fishing. Lake Hickory is the host of many fishing tournaments throughout the year. The rushing waters make it a great spot to find largemouth and striped bass. You can also catch channel and flathead catfish, black and white crappie, and bluegill. Some numerous coves and outlets can provide a private experience while out on the waters.

Around Town

Lake Hickory also has opportunities for camping, golfing, tennis, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. There are almost 1,500 acres set aside for four natural parklands where you can take in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain scenery.

Hickory is full of entertainment opportunities. You can visit the Catawba Science Center, Hickory Aviation Museum, and the Hickory Museum of Art. When you get hungry, you can stop to eat at Hatch Sandwich Bars, Olde Hickory Tap Room, and Backstreets Bar and Grill.

You can also visit Charlotte, just over an hour away. Charlotte is home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Billy Graham Library, and Belk Theatre. Local favorite restaurants include The Fig Tree Restaurant, Midwood Smokehouse, and The Capital Grille.
