About Lake George

A Natural Beauty

Lake George carries a reputation of nearly unparalleled beauty. The water body is conveniently located between New York City and Montreal, Canada, and just south of the Adirondack Mountains.

Lake George is a glacial lake that sprawls over 28,000 acres. At its deepest, Lake George plunges to 200 feet with an average depth of 82 feet.

The Lake George Park Commission oversees the lake's water levels while it decreases 12-16 inches every winter and fluctuates about five to six inches during the summer.

Interesting History

Samuel de Champlain founded the lake in 1609, but the lake was renamed after the French and Indian War for King George II. The body of water played a supporting role in several battles and hosted many prominent historical figures, including Thomas Jefferson.

A Plethora of Activities to Enjoy

Lake George offers enjoyable activities for all ages and contains some of the clearest and cleanest water in New York.

Water sports and motorboats are allowed on the lake, and there are several local marinas offering boat and jet ski rentals.

Scuba diving is also popular. Divers often discover old shipwrecks, sunken cannons, and much more.

Fishing is an all-time favorite on Lake George, especially ice fishing in the winter. In the spring and summer months, anglers can find everything from largemouth bass to landlocked salmon, lake and rainbow trout, and yellow perch.

Off the Water

Lake George's southern shore comprises activities and events, including wax museums, cruise ships, mini-golf, and other tourist attractions.

A popular place to visit is the Fort William Henry Museum and Restoration. You can experience how soldiers fought and died in the wilderness during the French and Indian War.

Shelving Rock Falls resides on the eastern shore of Lake George. It features a two-mile hike to a serene and beautiful waterfall.

The other wilderness areas surrounding the lake also offer plenty of opportunities to hike, bike, fish, rock climb, hunt/trap, ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, and observe the wildlife.

Live Beautifully on Lake George

Whether you are looking to buy a family home, a full-time retirement residence, or a vacation rental, Lake George is an excellent choice.
