Head back in time along a country road that winds through a sweet stand of maples to the peaceful east end of Deeryard Lake. Classic Northern Minnesota Cabin only about 20 minutes from Grand Marais, but the vibe and charm are 50 years back… Can’t build ‘em this close to the water these days! The lapping lake sings right out the door, watery scents mixing with pine and cedar. Walleye are plentiful. Tap a few maples in the spring to sweeten the morning cup of Joe. Simple, comfortable lake living. One bedroom and good space in the living room for additional sleeping: trundle bed that sleeps two is included. Light pours in from all sides and from above, too, via several skylights. Woodstove is “Ol’ Reliable” at the ready to take out the chill, dry out the gear. Propane wall furnace is Steady Eddy. Permanent crib dock lays out like a deck for soakin’ in the rays, studying sunsets, or just meditating on what’s it all about? The inside is just like a getaway cabin should be: clean simple lines, warm pine paneling, beams, dining nook in a bump-out that overlooks the lake and action at the dock. Kitchen is no stranger to processing the day’s haul of blueberries or wild mushrooms. Current owners have it all ready to go, including most of the furnishings. Nothing to do but nap, read, invigorate with a swim, stroll. After a fish fry, play some games of rummy, tell stories by the woodstove, nod off to breezy air soughing through a massive white pine soaring above the cabin, it tints dreams boreal green. Wake up and choose your adventure: splitting wood, putter with the watercraft, take a mountain bike ride, chew the fat with one of the neighbors who’ll eventually let you in on all the good places to explore! Or get to know your lot, 150’ of frontage provides privacy, and there’s the backlands of maples, each its own sylvan creation of twists, turns, spreading canopy – fall color is a dream in these woods! Handy shed stores the gear and good place for tools and doing minor projects. Deeryard Lake is quiet and mainly surrounded by public land, which is all you’ll see looking out from your new dock. Come get back in touch with a slower pace, mellow days, a contemplative mindset. A week here resets a wary mind, a few months is soul soothing.
