The Largest Lake Entirely in Indiana

Lake Monroe is a reservoir located about 10 miles southeast of Bloomington, Indiana. It is considered the largest lake that is situated in the state of Indiana. It crosses through Monroe and Brown County, with an expansive surface area of 10,750 acres.

Lake Monroe is conveniently located about 65 miles from the state's capital, Indianapolis. It is only about 85 miles to the great city of Louisville, Kentucky as well.

Lake Recreation

Like many other large lakes, water sports are one of the more popular attractions here. Boating, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and skiing are great sports to try on Lake Monroe.

This lake is also a great spot to enjoy Indiana's beautiful wildlife and landscapes. Surrounding the eastern side of the lake are the Yellowwood State Forest and Brown County State Park. On the northern and southern shores are Paynetown State Recreation Area, North Fork State Wildlife Refuge, the Middlefork Waterfowl Resting Area, the Charles C. Dean Wilderness, and the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area.

Within these parks, you can hike, bike, fish, ski, camp, ride horses, and enjoy the wildlife. Eagles and other birds are frequently seen and are truly loved by the residents.

For those who enjoy the thrill of the catch, anglers can expect to find largemouth bass, channel catfish, white crappie, walleye, and bluegill.
