Conveniently Located Near Atlanta, Augusta, and Athens

Lake Oconee covers about 19,000 acres with 374 miles of shoreline in Greene, Morgan, and Putnam counties in Georgia. It is conveniently located approximately 60 miles away from Atlanta and Augusta and about 30 miles from Athens, home of the University of Georgia.

Life on the Lake

Lake Oconee is known for its good fishing waters. Anglers frequently catch largemouth bass, white bass, striped bass, hybrid striped bass, crappie, and catfish. Fish in Lake Oconee can grow to massive sizes, with the record fish record being an almost 70-pound blue catfish.

People enjoy all types of boating on Lake Oconee, from kayaking and canoeing to motor boats and jet skis. There are plenty of boat rental services and boat ramps around Lake Oconee, so no matter where you are around the lake, you can get in the water.

Water sports such as swimming, wakeboarding, and waterskiing are also enjoyed here. Lake Oconee is a popular destination for camping, hiking, and picnicking as well.

The Oconee National Forest offers miles of hiking and equestrian trails within the forest and one trail for dirt bikes and four-wheelers.

In the City

Lake Oconee is surrounded by plenty of things to do when you aren’t on the lake, like the numerous golf clubs and state parks.

Nearby Lake Oconee is Liberty Truck and Tractor Pull, a tractor-pulling course. Here families can watch what is known as the “world’s heaviest motorsport,” or tractor pulling; modified tractors compete in pulling sheets of metal along a dirt course.

You can also spend time in nearby Atlanta, where you can visit the World of Coca-Cola, Piedmont Park, and the Children’s Museum of Atlanta. Some of Atlanta’s best restaurants include Atlanta Breakfast Club, Aria, and Poor Calvin’s.
