
Lake Lanier (or Lake Sidney Lanier) is a reservoir created by the Buford Dam and nestled in the northeastern foothills of the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains. Located only 30minutes away from the city of Atlanta, Lake Lanier has become one of Georgia's most popular lakes and draws millions of visitors each year. The lake spans across the counties of Hall, Forsyth, Dawson, Gwinnett, and Lumpkin and is fed mostly by the Chattahoochee River but also by the Chestatee River. With almost 700 miles of shoreline, Lake Lanier provides some of the most picturesque scenery in all of Georgia.
Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the 1950's, Lake Lanier is one of the most prominent residential and vacation spots in all of the state. Finished in1956, the lake is named for the famous Georgia poet and musician,Sidney Lanier, who passed away in 1881. From water skiing,recreational boating, sailing, and golfing, Lake Lanier never lets down those who come to take in all that it has to offer. This lake even hosted the rowing and sprint canoeing events of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
While it is an obvious hot spot for just about every water-related activity, fishing is particularly popular with the lake being annually stocked with various bass and trout. The Blue Ridge Mountains also offer a beautiful landscape for which visitors can experience through the many hiking trails, camping sites, and other outdoor-related activities. With many annual events and festivities, Lake Lanier has taken on a personality of its own and is a place that many people call home. Every year in November,the Lake Lanier Islands are decorated with Christmas lights covering over 6 miles and creating one the world's largest holiday light shows.
