About the Area

Hutchinson, Minnesota is a prairie town nearly straight west of Minneapolis. It will generally take a little more than an hour to get to the edge of the big city from here, and some people do commute on a daily basis so that they can live in this beautiful town.

At about 150 years old, Hutchinson sprawls into the open lands around it - but also hangs on the edge of the 650 acre Otter Lake & Campbell Lake Reservoir which was created from the damming of the Crow River's South Fork. The air here is fresh and the pace seems a bit slower, which gives residents the time they need to take in their pleasant surroundings and get to know their fellow residents.

There are a few recreational lakes just minutes to the south of Hutchinson such as Preston Lake, Allie Lake, Lake Addie, and the popular Lake Marion with its regional park on the eastern shore. And Silver Lake is an attractive community that sits on the shores of its own lake just five minutes to Hutchinson's east. Most of the lakeshore real estate in this region is year-round for those who work in the Hutchinson area.

But as you travel north toward Litchfield and into Meeker County, the lakes become larger and deeper, and you will find a more evident mixture of lake homes and lake cabins. Several of the bigger water bodies such as Belle Lake, Cedar Lake, Lake Jennie and Washington Lake, are in the 1,000 to 2,000 acre range and provide great boating opportunities. Those who enjoy long pontoon rides in the evening will appreciate the larger circumference so that they don't get dizzy going around in small circles. For the clearest water in the area, Minnie Belle, at 545 acres, offers visibility up to 16 feet.

Litchfield sits near the northwest end of this cluster of lakes. With Lake Ripley on its southern border, its 6,500 residents have many recreational opportunities within walking distance to downtown, or on the many surrounding lakes just a few miles away. Dassel and Darwin are two other smaller communities that lie just east of Litchfield a bit closer to the Twin Cities.
