About the Area

Guntersville  Lake, Alabama's largest lake covering 69,100 acres, is located in the  northeast part of the state and only 75 miles from Chattanooga,  Tennessee. Nestled in the Appalachian foothills, Guntersville Lake has  been nationally recognized for its beauty and overall enjoyment. This  reservoir was created by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1939 and was  named after John Gunter who established the town of Guntersville soon  after the American Revolution.

Known  for its fine sport fishing and beautiful scenery, Guntersville Lake  offers many choices when it comes to an outdoor vacation in Alabama.  Annual events at Guntersville Lake include fishing tournaments, boating  races, a songwriter's festival, and triathlons with many other  activities as well. With over 950 miles of shoreline and a wide array  of accommodations, Guntersville Lake serves as the perfect location for  taking a vacation, building a home, and even retiring. Guntersville  Lake is nationally renowned for its bass fishing, with the town being  named by Field &Stream in 2008 as on of the top 10 fishing towns in  America. Being Alabama's largest lake, it offers plenty of room for all  visitors to enjoy boating, skiing, swimming, and many other  water-related activities. Also, with the Appalachian foothills at your  backdoor, visitors can hike, camp, bike, golf, and simply enjoy the  outdoors. Nearby, there is the Lake Guntersville State Park which  covers 6,000 acres of forest and is home to many different types of  wildlife including deer, various migrating birds, and bald eagles.  Also, only fifteen minutes north of Guntersville Lake is the Cathedral  Caverns State Park where you can see the world's largest cavern  entrance and stalagmite collection.
