Dakota County, Minnesota

About the Area

Dakota County is an expansive geographic area in the Southeastern Twin Cities. Its northern border is just across the Minnesota River from St. Paul, and on the eastern side it is hemmed in by the Mississippi River and the western edge of Wisconsin. The historic river town of Hastings provides a great atmosphere for watching the boats go by.

Because of its size, Dakota County has been growing into its rural farmlands for some time now - but it still has a long way to go. The southern half of the county still feels similar to other locations much further from densely populated areas, and you would never know that the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are just a half hour away.

The northern suburbs of Dakota County, such as Burnsville, Apple Valley and Eagan were mainly developed throughout the 1970s and 1980s, although many pockets still have new homes being built today. Eagan is rich with tiny little lakes hidden by trees, along with small numbers of homes encircling each of them. Just a couple miles to the north you will find the exclusive community of Sunfish Lake, and the treasured lake of the same name. Large parcels of wooded lakeshore land are here, and homes attached to them that only a few can afford.

Traveling southwest, near the Interstate 35 corridor, you will come across the larger lakes of the county in Southern Burnsville and Lakeville. Crystal Lake, Alimagnet Lake, Orchard Lake and Lake Marion provide a varied range of recreational opportunities. Further south yet is Chub Lake and Lake Byllesby, which hugs the southern border of the county and is fed by the Cannon River.
