About the Area

Aitkin feels like home. That is maybe the best description for this small but complete community that sits at a crossroads of Highway 169 heading north to Grand Rapids, and Highway 210 which connects Aitkin to Crosby and Brainerd just to the west.

It is a clean and well kept residential setting on the banks of the Ripple River. An RV park sits intermingled with homes at the river's edge within just a few blocks of the historic downtown business district. In an era where core businesses have left the town center of many communities, those in Aitkin seem to be doing fine as people who live here - and others who don't - conveniently move between the storefronts and professional services on foot, creating a neighborly business climate.

Aitkin sits only about fifteen miles north of Mille Lacs Lake in the southwester corner of Aitkin County, and has a heavy concentration of mid-sized recreational lakes between the big lake and itself. Two of the more popular larger ones are Cedar Lake and Farm Island Lake, each weighing in close to 2,000 acres. There is also a wide variety of lakes in the 500 acre range within just a few miles of town, such as Ripple Lake, Spirit Lake and Elm Island Lake to name a few, so year-round lake homes are quite common for those who work right in the Aitkin Area.

The Mississippi River curls around the north side of town on its meandering trek west to Brainerd and south beyond. Many of the properties that rest on the banks of the river are larger acreage offerings, yet still very close to town, and you can find hunting acreage and other sparsely developed areas throughout much of the region.Heading north up Highway 169, there is not a lot of development until Hill City about thirty miles up the road, and Grand Rapids another fifteen minutes further. But you can find a few more recreational lakes near Waukenabo and east toward McGregor and the Big Sandy Lake Area.
